Westlands, Nairobi – Westlands Member of Parliament Hon. Tim Wanyonyi has once again demonstrated his commitment to supporting vulnerable families by providing humanitarian assistance to victims of the devastating fire that destroyed more than 200 houses at Astrol in Githogoro, Karura Ward.
The inferno, which occurred on Friday, 26th June 2026, left hundreds of residents homeless after reducing their homes and property to ashes, forcing many families to seek temporary shelter as they struggled to rebuild their lives.
On behalf of the MP, the relief exercise was led by his Office Manager, Centrine Simuli, accompanied by members of his constituency staff. Every affected family received a package of essential food and household items, including maize flour, rice, cooking oil, sugar, green grams, tea leaves, salt, soap and blankets to cushion them against the immediate effects of the tragedy.
The distribution exercise brought together national and county government leaders, among them Westlands Deputy County Commissioner Mayabi Buxton, Karura Ward MCA Fiu Nifiu, Kitisuru Ward MCA Alvin Olando Palapala, and Karura Assistant Chief Barabas Masakhalia, who joined residents in expressing solidarity with the affected families.
Speaking during the exercise, representatives from Hon. Wanyonyi’s office conveyed the MP’s heartfelt condolences to the victims, assuring them that his office would continue working with government agencies and other stakeholders to support the recovery process.
Residents expressed appreciation for the timely intervention, saying the relief supplies would go a long way in helping families meet their immediate needs after losing nearly all their possessions in the blaze.
The Githogoro intervention adds to a long list of humanitarian initiatives that have defined Tim Wanyonyi’s leadership in Westlands Constituency. Over the years, the legislator has consistently responded to emergencies affecting residents, including providing relief food, bedding and other essentials to families displaced by fires in Kangemi and Sigor. His approach has been to ensure that victims receive immediate support while encouraging collaboration with government agencies and well-wishers to facilitate long-term recovery.
Beyond emergency response, Wanyonyi has built a reputation around community empowerment and social protection. Through the Westlands NG-CDF, he has championed education by supporting bright and needy students through bursaries and scholarships, helping many remain in school despite financial challenges.
His office has also invested heavily in youth empowerment. Among the flagship initiatives has been sponsoring driving lessons and issuing driving licences to 180 young people, equipping them with skills and qualifications that improve their employability. The constituency has equally supported vocational training programmes in areas such as mechanics, plumbing, cookery and other technical skills aimed at creating self-reliance among young people.
In healthcare, Hon. Wanyonyi has prioritised support for vulnerable members of society. His office has facilitated medical outreach programmes and sponsored health insurance for elderly residents, enabling hundreds of senior citizens to access medical services without the burden of prohibitive healthcare costs. The constituency has also supported women, youth and Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) through empowerment initiatives, including the issuance of Uwezo Fund cheques to community groups to strengthen entrepreneurship and household incomes.
Sports development has remained another pillar of his leadership, with sustained support for local clubs, school sports, tournaments and youth talent development, reflecting his belief that sports can transform lives by creating opportunities for young people.
The latest intervention in Githogoro reinforces the MP’s long-held philosophy that leadership goes beyond legislation and should be reflected in practical action during moments of crisis. As families begin the difficult journey of rebuilding their homes and livelihoods, the relief support offers immediate hope while highlighting the importance of collective responsibility in responding to disasters.
Residents and local leaders have called on more individuals, organisations and humanitarian partners to complement ongoing efforts and assist the affected families as they work towards restoring normalcy after one of the worst fire incidents to hit the settlement in recent months.
