The Government of Rwanda has approved production of weed, scientifically known as cannabis sativa. The cabinet led by President Paul Kagame on 12th October, 2020 approved cultivation of cannabis for export. However, use of the stimulant for medical or recreational purposes remains illegal in the country.
According to New Frontier Data Analysis, the approved production of weed for export shall raise the country’s earnings to up to $345 billion. They expect to use this income to boost their economy.
This is a move that may be detrimental to the general public, especially the youth. Although the government has allowed production for export only, this move exposes more people to access it. Consequently, peddlers will have an easier time making their kill.
Rwanda’s Minister of Health Dr Daniel Ngamije has warned the drug peddlers that this does not give a leeway for their activities. He has insisted that they shall still enforce the law against narcotics.
This will not give an excuse for drug abusers and dealers. The law against narcotics is available and it will continue to be enforced~ Rwanda Minister of Health.
