Political analyst and activist Timothy Akhungu has added his voice to the growing condemnation of the recent attack on Kitisuru MCA Alvin Olando, describing the incident as a gross violation of democratic principles and a reflection of moral decay in Kenyan politics. The MCA was assaulted by unknown individuals in Nairobi’s Central Business District in what is being linked to politically motivated intimidation.
In his statement, Akhungu decried the attack as cowardly and primitive, stating that such actions have no place in a modern, democratic society. He highlighted the need to respect Hon. Olando as an elected leader representing the people of Kitisuru Ward, noting that leaders, regardless of their affiliations, deserve dignity and protection.
“This attack is not just an assault on Hon. Olando but an assault on democracy itself,” Akhungu said. He further warned that unprovoked attacks on leaders threaten the very foundations of governance and leadership.
Akhungu pointed out that the attack appears to target MCAs allied to Hon. Tim Wanyonyi, hinting at deeper political motives. He urged those behind such schemes to confront their grievances openly rather than resorting to violence. “If you have an issue with Hon. Wanyonyi, face him directly instead of targeting his allies like Hon. Olando,” he remarked.
He also emphasized the dangerous precedent set by such violence, warning that it fosters division and mistrust within communities. Akhungu called for political tolerance and the accommodation of divergent views, stressing that lawlessness must not be allowed to take root in Nairobi or any other part of the country.
Timothy Akhungu concluded by urging law enforcement agencies to act swiftly, apprehend the perpetrators, and ensure they face the full force of the law. “Justice must not only be done but seen to be done. This is the only way to restore confidence and deter further incidents,” he said.
The attack on Hon. Olando has drawn widespread condemnation, with leaders and residents calling for unity and peace.
