Reasons why you shouldn’t refrigerate the following foods

The refrigerator is one of the most essential electronic appliances that every home has. It is very significant especially in storing perishable goods. It slows bacteria growth keeping the contents fresh for longer. But besides its importance, it also has some limitations depending on the type of food being stored. Some foodstuffs should not be stored in the fridge as it degrades the nutrition value of it.

Some of the foods that should never be stored in the fridge include:

Bread-Although the cold temperature prevents mold growth, they also alter the taste of bread, making it to be crispy.
• Apples-Storing apples in the freezer (ice cubes) makes the adjacent foodstuffs to spoil faster. Apple’s outer cover contains ethylene, which is a ripening agent and when emitted accelerates the spoiling process of the nearby food. It is advisable to store them in air-tight containers if need to store them.
Garlic –the low temperatures makes the garlic to produce buds which gives them a bitter taste when added to food. Besides, it makes them moldy and soft. It is more appropriate if they are stored in a cool dry place.

Melon –Refrigerating them halts their ripening process. Besides, it also makes them taste differently. The leftovers should be stored in air-tight containers.
Potatoes- The cold conditions in the fridge convert the starch in the potatoes into sugar which makes them unpleasantly sweet and brown when cooked. The additional sugar content can lead to the production of acrylamide which is harmful when the potatoes are cooked in high temperatures like deep frying.
Onions-The starch present in onion is also converted into sugar making them produce an unpleasant smell. This interferes with the nutrient contents of the onions.
Tomatoes-Cold temperature dulls the flavor and ripening process of fresh tomatoes. Instead, keep the basket away from sunlight.
