Re-opening of universities and tertiary institutions.

The ministry of education notified the public about the progressive re-opening of universities and tertiary institutions. The re-opening of universities and tertiary institutions  , to commence on 5th October 2020. The ministry of education adds that the board of TTCs and TVETs will themselves announce the resumption date for in-person learning. Priority  given to students, undertaking practical courses particularly science courses.

Ahead of the ministries notification on re-opening of universities and tertiary institutions, institutions are sending circulars to students through various whats app groups. Institutions are giving priority to finalists to complete their projects, practical and final year examinations.

Safe resumption of in-person learning in all universities and tertiary institutions requires utmost fidelity to the Ministry of Health’s COVID-19 protocols and guidelines. Guided by those protocols and guidelines, it directed that:

Adherence to the COVID-19 protocols.

  1. All learning institutions will be required to mandatorily enforce strict adherence to COVID-19 health and safety protocols. The protocols include:
  2. a)   Monitoring of body temperatures for all learners and persons accessing the institution.
  3. b) Observance of high levels of hygiene.
  4. c) Hand washing/ use of sanitizers.
  5. d) Adoption of innovative approaches to uphold the guidelines on physical and social distancing and use of face masks.
  6. All universities and tertiary institutions that were quarantine centers to be fumigated under the supervision of the ministry of health before their reopening.
  7. All universities and tertiary institutions to link  to a health facility prior to re-opening.

Support

  1. All learning institutions  supposed to provide psycho social , spiritual support to learners and staff during the on-going pandemic.

Compliance

  1. Board, vice-chancellors, principals shall ensure full compliance with the guidelines and protocols issued by the ministry of health. Failure to which, the institutions shall be closed for bleaching the health protocols.

6. Education officials in conjunction with Public Health Officials will continuously monitor and review the levels of compliance with respect to the measures.
