The residents of Mt. View Ward gathered in large numbers at Kabete National Polytechnic grounds for the NG-CDF bursary application process, an event presided over by Westlands MP Hon. Tim Wanyonyi. The initiative, aimed at supporting students from disadvantaged backgrounds, saw 1,000 bursary forms allocated to secondary school students and 300 to college and university students.
Hon. Tim Wanyonyi began by expressing his gratitude to the people of Mt. View for their support during his family’s bereavement in December. “I lost my mother, and many of you came to console with me at our home. For those who could not come, I know you prayed for us, and all went well,” he said.
In a lighthearted moment, the MP acknowledged the heightened political activity in the ward, noting that many individuals had already declared their interest in contesting for the MCA seat. “I think MCA Maurice already has many people who have declared their intention to vie for his seat. They are announcing everywhere that they are in the race. Will the MCA concentrate on his work or will he get worried about his re-election? Maybe they should wait until next year, but that is their right. I do not want to meddle in it,” he joked.
Commitment to Transparent Bursary Disbursement
Hon. Wanyonyi reassured the public that the bursary application process was fair and free from manipulation. “We have put up mechanisms to ensure transparency and reduce complaints. Once you get the form, you will get a cheque. The forms are free of charge—do not give anyone money. This is your right, funded by your taxes,” he emphasized.
He also reminded parents and guardians of the continuing scholarship program for high-performing students. “We just need you to ensure that the child is learning and maintaining top performance. We will support them even through college. Education is our priority,” he stated.
Governance and Political Commitment
Hon. Wanyonyi reaffirmed his gubernatorial ambition, stating, “My journey to City Hall will resume. When we get there, the doors will be open to you. We want to ensure a smooth transition and continuation of the good work we are doing.”
He also addressed growing concerns over security and the alleged abductions of young people, criticizing the government’s silence on the matter. “We elected a government led by President Ruto, which must operate under the law. However, our children are being abducted by hooded individuals in unmarked vehicles and later found in morgues. This is unacceptable and amounts to torture. If your child is abducted, do not get tired—keep demanding answers,” he urged.
The MP also reaffirmed his party’s political stance. “As ODM members, we will retain our identity. Nobody will consume us in coalitions. If we do enter any coalition, ODM will remain the dominant party and will have its say,” he declared.
Concerns Over NHIF Transition to SHA
Hon. Wanyonyi criticized the government’s implementation of the Social Health Authority (SHA) scheme, which replaced NHIF. “Parliament passed the SHA bill after pressure from the government. However, it is already facing challenges, from wrong identifications to hospitals rejecting it due to NHIF debts. The government must ensure that SHA works. There is no point in replacing a functional system with one that does not work,” he argued.
He also called for proper planning ahead of the 2027 general elections, emphasizing the importance of a transparent voter registration process and boundary review.
Supporting Raila Odinga’s AUC Bid
Hon. Wanyonyi expressed confidence in ODM leader Raila Odinga’s candidacy for the African Union Commission (AUC) Chairmanship. “Let us allow Raila to lead Africa. Baba Raila is cherished not only in Kenya but across the continent. He is a statesman, and we are praying for him ahead of the February 15, 2025, election,” he said.
Local Leadership Support
Mt. View MCA Maurice Ochieng, who also addressed the gathering, praised Hon. Wanyonyi’s development track record and endorsed his gubernatorial bid. “Hon. Tim Wanyonyi is the incoming Nairobi Governor in 2027. This time, there is no reverse gear. No one has been as loyal, consistent, and resourceful to ODM as Tim Wanyonyi,” he stated.
He further requested support for road infrastructure in the ward. “I am requesting if Hon. Tim can help us tarmac Full Gospel Church Road, which is in a pathetic state,” he added.
NG-CDF Chairlady’s Remarks
Frida Lenayasa, Chairlady of Westlands NG-CDF, assured the residents that all qualified applicants from Mt. View would receive their bursaries. “Today is your day, and we will only serve Mt. View residents. Anyone with a filled and stamped form will not miss out on a cheque,” she affirmed.
She highlighted key infrastructure projects supported by NG-CDF in the ward, including the construction of a state-of-the-art dormitory at Kangemi High School, five additional classrooms at Kangemi Primary School, and the tarmacking of Muiri Road, which connects Mt. View Mall to Mukeu Court.
