Reopened schools are now Covid-19 hotspots. On Monday, Tononoka Secondary School Principal succumbed to the deadly virus. Consequently, the school has since been closed down. This happens as the number of new cases continues to rise everyday, with teachers, students and staff testing positive for the virus. Several teachers and students have tested positive of the disease in Coast, leading to closing of two schools. Did the government reopen schools too early and put students at a risk?
Schools are still struggling to fulfill the Covid-19 regulations that the ministry of education put in place upon reopening. This put learners, teachers and staff at risk of infection. The government has not put any effort in ensuring that schools comply with these regulations. Instead, the school headteachers have been put responsible of ensuring compliance with these rules.
Meanwhile, the government has shelved the reopening of other classes until the curve flattens. However, Grade 4, Class 8 and Form 4 will remain in school. They are preparing for national examinations scheduled for March next year.
Reckless Country
As this happens, political gatherings are still happening, attracting massive crowds that pose a hazard. However, politicians seem to be oblivious of the danger that they are exposing themselves to.
The country is currently experiencing a second wave of the virus. The daily exponential rise is steadily overwhelming hospitals, with some hitting their maximum capacity. Some hospitals are even hiring tents to handle the daily increasing cases.
With many people ignoring anti-covid regulations, the government is seeking to reinforce them. On Monday, the government allegedly did a crackdown targeting those ignoring use of masks. However, Kenyans are still ignoring them.
